Research Poultry Turkeys
Animals and facilities
Schothorst Feed Research has several facilities available for turkey research. Research can be performed in floor pens or digestibility cages. Trials with floor pens are used for testing of feed composition and additives. Trials with digestibility cages are suitable for testing the effect of feed stuffs and additives on digestibility. In each facility accurate measurements on growth, feed intake and feed conversion ratio will be done on pen or cage level. Besides these standard parameters other measurements, like digestibility of feed stuffs on intestinal level, bone quality and composition of the micro flora, can be performed depending on the aim of the trial.

Objective

Trial set up
Turkey research can be performed with 36 floor pens of 4.5×3 m. Each pen contains 40 turkeys that can be studied until 20 weeks of age. This set up gives the opportunity to test 6 treatments × 6 replicates related to optimal feed composition and nutrient requirement.
Standard observations (pen level):
o Body weight at arrival (random sample) and at each phase feed change
o Growth per phase
o Feed intake per phase
o Feed conversion ratio per phase
o Mortality
o Litter quality
We like to consult you on further possibilities like slaughter yield and intestinal health parameters.
Production performance will be reported per phase and cumulative over the whole experimental period.
Digestibility trials
Objective
o Determine the effect of for example:
o Digestibility of feed stuffs
o Effect of additives on digestibility
o On among others:
o Production performance
o Excreta composition
Trial set up
Depending of the age of the turkeys research can be performed on digestibility cages (0.88×0.70 m) with young turkeys until 3 weeks or digestibility cages (0.9×0.6 m) for individual housing of turkeys until slaughter age. For young turkeys 72 cages are available with the opportunity to test 8 treatments × 6 replicates. For turkeys until slaughter age 36 cages are available with the opportunity to test 4 treatments × 9 replicates.

o Composition of excreta (total nutrient balance) or intestinal content (ileal digestibility of nutrients)
