Animals and facilities
Schothorst Feed Research has one facility available for breeder research. This small scale facility is suitable for testing of feed composition and additives on fertility of breeder hens. Accurate measurements on laying rate, egg weight, egg mass, feed intake and feed conversion ratio will be done on pen level. Besides these standard parameters other measurements can be performed depending on the aim of the trial.

Trial set up
Breeder hen research is performed with 36 floor pens of 4.5×3 m. In each pen 70 breeder hens and 7 breeder cocks can be housed. This set up gives the opportunity to test 6 treatments × 6 replicates related to optimal feed composition on performance and fertility, and to nutrient requirement.
Standard observations (pen level):
o Laying rate
o Egg weight
o Egg mass
o Feed intake
o Feed conversion ratio
o Mortality

Production performance will be reported per four week period and cumulative over the whole experimental period.
