History
The history of Schothorst Feed Research dates back to the 1930s. About that time the production of compound feeds in the Netherlands started up. Urged by their (farming) members, agricultural organizations and a number of cooperatives decided to initiate a control on compound feeds. In 1934 the cooperative feed compounders and three central agricultural organizations (the then KNBTB, KNLC and NCBTB) established the CLO Control Foundation. In 1938 CLO Control obtained its own experimental farm, and the “Institute for Modern Animal Feed De Schothorst" Foundation in Hoogland near Amersfoort was founded.

On 1 July 1971 both foundations were combined into the "CLO Institute for Animal Feed De Schothorst” Foundation, but on 1 July 1993 both foundations were formally separated again to guarantee the independence of CLO Control. Meanwhile, the ‘De Schothorst’ estate had been left in 1978 due to urban development in Amersfoort. The institute was given 88 hectares of land in lease near Lelystad, which in turn became ownership in 1998.
As per 1 July 2002, the CLO Control Foundation was disbanded. Some of the activities were taken over by De Schothorst. One of these activities is maintaining nutrient requirements for compound feeds, under the name of "Schothorst Compound Feed Consultants". The CLO feedstuff table is now called the "Schothorst Feedstuff Table". The derived nutrients programme has been maintained in the same form. The CLO quality mark on the other hand was dismantled. The auditing, consultancy and certification activities that CLO Control Foundation undertook for the quality mark are continued by De Schothorst in a new form by “Schothorst Quality Consultants”. An association has been sought with strategic partners such as Lloyds’ Register to offer certification activities.
Since 1 January 2004 the activities in the field of research, consultancy and quality management have become independent and placed under “Schothorst Feed Research”. The VVM Netherlands Compound Feed Industry Information Society (Vereniging Voorlichting Mengvoederindustrie) joined Schothorst Feed Research on 1 July 2005.
