SCHOTHORST FEED RESEARCH
Schothorst Feed Research (SFR) is an independent private knowledge and information center for Animal Nutrition, dedicated to assist its clients in the development and implementation of nutrional knowledge into profitable and innovative feed concepts that are socially acceptable. We provide our services to our international customerbase from the headoffice and state-of-the-art facilities in the Netherlands. The strength of our organization is here roots in the feed industry and here focus on expertise towards the feed industry and suppliers of the industry. The unique combination of expertise in digestive physiology, feedstuff quality, quality assurance, feed evaluation systems and nutritional requirements of high productive animals and the continuous interaction with feed companies all over the world, make SFR an excellent partner for ambitious companies in the feed to food chain.
Activities are centered around animal nutrition and comprise:
1. research;
2. nutritional consultancy;
3. quality consultancy;
4. training.
Research at SFR can be characterized as applied strategic research with a strong focus on animal nutrition and the interaction of feed with the gastro intestinal microflora and health of the digestive tract. Besides self initiated strategic research, SFR also performs contract research for both the feed industry as suppliers of the feed industry.
Research
The research themes at Schothorst Feed Research are:
- development of feed evaluation systems, especially energy evaluation for target animals;
- determination of nutritional requirements of high productive animals;
- feedstuff evaluation;
- reduction of emissions into the environment (N,P, Cu, CD, Zn, methane etc.);
- antibiotic free feeds;
- improvement of gut health;
- effect of technology on nutritional quality;
- the interaction of feed with:
o animal health;
o quality of animal products;
o animal welfare.
Nutritional consultancy
The expertise of the researchers at SFR on the implementation of science and the latest developments into animal feeds, their knowledge of practical farming and the daily experience at our own facilities combined with our fundament in the feed industry makes us an appre¬ciated sparring partner for nutritionist and R&D director in the feed industry.
Quality consultancy
A group of consultants is specialized in quality assurance programs and quality control in the feed industry within Schothorst Feed Research. They are able to integrate practical solutions, based on expertise of the compound feed industry, with valuable knowledge transfer.

Training
The knowledge of SFR of all levels in the feed industry enables us to provide courses and consultancy for employees on different levels, from training in purchase to advanced nutrition courses. For more info check our course guide (hyperlink).
Cooperation
Schothorst Feed Research has a focus on nutrition and the expertise areas that are related to it. In livestock production nutrition can be used to solve or reduce various problems due to or challenges in environment, economics, quality, welfare, health and reproduction. These themes change regularly. Therefore, SFR has established a wide network and cooperation with institutes and experts to ensure that we provide customers the expertise needed for excellence in research.
Organisation
Schothorst Feed Research currently employs approx. 60 people, of which 22 academics, researchers, nutritionists, veterinarians, immunologists and adaption physiologists. The scientist are organized in different clusters (poultry, pigs, ruminants and quality consultants). They are supported by a laboratory, an experimental coordination centre, technical and admi¬nistrative services.
Facilities
